The following commendations are among the many collected when students were asked to nominate their supervisors for exemplary performance.
I would like to nominate Bev Nickerson. I have worked for her my entire four years here and I could not have had a better experience.
—Jessica Bush '06
I work in the natural science department for Caroline Miller, and I would like to nominate her as an outstanding supervisor. She is pleasant to work for and is patient and understanding. I only hope that after college I may find a job with a boss like Caroline.
—Katie Himmelberger '08
I would like to nominate Bob Hooey for being a great boss! He is my supervisor for the student center booth staff position, he always has a smile on his face, he's a great guy to work with and a great friend. If I ever need any additional support I know he is there for me.
I would also like to nominate the student manager for the same booth staff position, Jarret Camhi. Jarret is an overall excellent man of character, and keeps things ship-shape. Without him I don't know where the student center would be—Faith Paulick '07
I would like to nominate my supervisor, Irma Victorius, for the drawing. I have worked for her for two years now and I could not ask for a better leader and instructor. She is a pleasure to work with and very competent and adept at her job. Thank you.
—Ryan Case '07
Mr. Holt is a very hardworking man, and he has greatly contributed to the academic successes of Washington College. He is truly a valuable asset to the President's Office.
—Mark Stevens '07
I nominate my supervisor John Wagner, Director of the Waterfront. He single-handedly keeps the waterfront and water sports operating smoothly, works tirelessly and mostly solitarily at general upkeep of the Boathouse facility, and is the loudest and most consistent voice for much-needed improvements to Washington College athletic programs that operate at the waterfront.
—Brandon Righi '07
I'd like to nominate my supervisor, Dr. Kathryn Moncrief, of the English department. She has always been so understanding of other obligations I have, allowing for flexible hours. She has not only been a supervisor, but a mentor, and I really enjoy working with her. I've learned so much! Thank you!
—Kelly Biringer '07
And when supervisors were asked to describe their exemplary student workers, here are some of the comments received:
Cheryl Acerbo '08 is very dependable and a good worker who needs little instruction to carry out the tasks requested of her.
—Annie Coleman, Executive Assistant to the President
Michelle Silva '06 works in the Office for Institutional Research and Assessment as a Research Assistant. She has not only researched ad hoc requests for Deans, Senior Advisors and the Provost but has reported her results directly to them as well. Michelle is an extremely competent and professional colleague. I am confident she will be as great an asset to her future employer as she is to Washington College.
—Angelo M Sorrentino, Jr, Assistant to the Provost for Institutional Research and Assessment
A primary line of communication the College holds with its alumni, parents, and friends is through the Phonathon. Although I came in the middle of this year's campaign, it is obvious to me that every one of the students working as Phonathon callers or student supervisors takes pride in their work and enjoys it! Those are two very important factors for any employee to have and I think it's rare to find it exemplified in a group of college students. It's a pleasure to work with such interesting individuals and to be confident in the image of the College they display to our various constituencies!
—Rebekah Hardy, Assistant Director of Annual Giving in the Development Office
Washington College and the National Student Employment Association (NSEA) announce the week of April 9 - 15, 2006 has been set aside to recognize and celebrate one of our most valuable assets - our student employees. National Student Employment Week has been formally set aside:
Student employees gain career-enhancing skills and are better prepared for the job market upon graduation. Additionally, they receive the satisfaction of earning a portion of their college expenses.
Both on campus and within the Chestertown community our student employees fulfill vital roles. They perform invaluable services with passion, commitment, and initiative. Within the community more than thirty-five federal work-study students provide much needed support at Garnett Elementary School, Chestertown Middle School and the Kent Family Center.
During the week of April 9 - 15 please take a moment to thank a student employee for their valued service to the college community. Let them know that they are a significant and vital component of our success, and acknowledge the efforts of those that represent Washington College within the community.
