Beginning on the ground floor, the Governor toured the Public Archaeology Laboratory, which drew a crowd of over 700 visitors that day. Lab Director Liz Seidel and John Seidel, recently appointed Director of the Center for Environment & Society (CES), showed him artifact displays, explained the College's archaeological projects and some of the sophisticated surveying and remote sensing equipment maintained by the lab and CES.

Center for Environment & Society Director John Seidel explains an archaeological predictive model to Governor O'Malley and Frank Kratovil. The Governor was particularly interested in an archaeological sensitivity map of the five Upper Eastern Shore counties. Produced by the Lab and the Center for Environment & Society for the Maryland State Highway Administration, the map models the probable location of archaeological sites using environmental variables, allowing state managers and planners to avoid sensitive historic remains.

Hodson Trust-Griswold Director of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience Adam Goodheart led the tour upstairs.

From the Custom House porch, CES Director John Seidel, Governor O'Malley, Frank Kratovil, and C.V. Starr Director Adam Goodheart took in the wonderful view of the Chester River, the schooner
Sultana, and the throngs gathered to watch the annual dumping of the tea.
