The C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience hosted a reception accompanying the opening of Architect of Democracy: Photos from the Career of Senator Birch Bayh. Curated by Washington College junior Jasper Colt, the exhibition blended historic images from Senator Bayh's storied career with recollections taken from an oral history interview Colt conducted earlier this year.
Senator Bayh has been a Senior Fellow at the C.V. Starr Center since 2006. In his "second career" as a teacher, he chairs an extracurricular series on public service, entitled the Senatorial Colloquy on American History and Politics. On February 22, 2008, Washington College will award him an honorary doctorate of laws in recognition of his legislative accomplishments and ongoing contributions to our community. The exhibit constitutes the Starr Center's personal "thank you" to the Senator and his family. Faculty and staff, Colloquy alumna, community members, and friends from Senator Bayh's public life gathered at the Custom House for the reception, which included a chocolate-frosted cake to celebrate his 80th birthday. Architect of Democracy will remain on display through March 7th. Please contact the Starr Center's Jenifer Endicott (410-810-7161 or jendicott2@washcoll.edu) with any questions about touring the exhibit.
