Tree Planting

June 5, 2008

Chestertown Middle School volunteers teamed up with the Town of Chestertown and the Center for Environment & Society at Washington College to plant more than 80 trees as part of an urban greening project funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

Town Manager Bill Ingersoll says one goal is to increase the local tree canopy around the school and in the greenbelt behind Rolling Road. "Leaves and roots help to control erosion and stormwater runoff," explains JoAnn Fairchild, CES Program Manager, "thereby curbing pollution to local waterways." Healthy tree canopy also encourages people to walk more on tree-lined streets, while drivers tend to be less aggressive.

The trees—mostly Red Maple, Red Oak, Pin Oak and Tulip Poplar—were obtained through the MD Department of Natural Resources "Tree-mendous Maryland" program. According to DNR, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago—the second best time is now."
