The sanctuary at Bethel A.M.E. Church was filled to the rafters for the 2008 George Washington Book Prize Lecture. Marcus Rediker, chair of University of Pittsburgh's history department and winner of the $50,000 award for his book, The Slave Ship: A Human History, delivered as much performance as lecture: With Chestertown vocalist Karen Somerville, pianist Stef Scaggiari and bass player Tom Anthony, he made palpable the horror and grief of "The Floating Dungeon," as his lecture was titled, the vessels that carried an estimated 12.4 million desperately unwilling Africans across the Middle Passage of the Atlantic to help build the new America.
