GIS Conference

March 16-17, 2009

Washington College students and staff attended a two-day GIS (Geographic Information Systems) conference at Towson University. While there, students listened to talks from leading professionals in the field of GIS, learned about different career opportunities, and got a chance to meet Washington College alumni who are in the field. Students also submitted posters for the Map Design Competition.

Debby Cooper '09 shown with her Chestertown Historical Geography Project submission. The project has been using Sanborn maps from the 1900s and the students have been digitzing the building outlines and then using the census data from the same years entering who lived there during that time. Interns are also building the houses the way they looked in the 1900s in Google SketchUp to create a fly through of historic Chestertown.

Using the plans a developer was proposing, students brought the plans into ArcMap and overlaid it with the aerial imagery. The purpose was to show the town the impact these new plans would have on the look and feel of the town.
