Pulitzer-Honored Alumnus to Address Class of 2001

Bradbury Cancels Due to Illness

Chestertown, MD, May 17, 2001 — Due to an unforeseen illness, famed science fiction author Ray Bradbury will be unable to attend Washington College's reunion and 219th Commencement activities on Saturday, May 19, 2001 and Sunday, May 20, 2001, as originally announced. All Reunion and Commencement programs will proceed as scheduled.

Alumnus Kevin Noblet '75, an Associated Press editor honored for two Pulitzer Prize-winning stories, will address the Class of 2001 and receive an Alumni Citation with Academy Award-winning film producer and alumna Tammy Tiehel Stedman '86. The Commencement will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Campus Lawn on Sunday, May 20, and be simulcast in the College's Tawes Theatre. In case of rain, Commencement will be held in the College's Cain Gymnasium.

On Saturday, May 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the College will host the program "Life After Liberal Arts" in Norman James Theatre, featuring Noblet and Stedman, who will speak on the value of the liberal arts and sciences and the sometimes twisted paths we take to success after college. The event will include a showing of Stedman's 2000 Academy Award-winning short comedy, My Mother Dreams the Satan's Disciples in New York. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Bradbury booksigning scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday has been cancelled, as well as the 10 a.m. showing of the film Something Wicked This Way Comes on Saturday morning. No other schedule changes have been made.
